

A New Jersey native, soprano Jo Ellen Miller, maintains a busy performance schedule, singing
a broad range of classical and contemporary music in a variety of venues across the country.
Most recently she was heard at Tanglewood Music Center as soprano soloist in Elliott Carter's "A
Mirror on Which to Dwell," conducted by Jeffrey Milarsky. This December she will make her debut
at Washington, D.C.'s Library of Congress, performing Charles Wuorinen's "A Winter's Tale" with
Maestro Wuorinen conducting. March 2, 2009 will bring Jo Ellen's Chicago Symphony debut,
singing under the baton of Pierre Boulez.
She recently participated as a soloist at the John Duffy Composers' Institute, working with brand
new operas by up-and-coming composers Jorge Muniz, Leanna Primiani, and Bill Withem.
Previous venues include Ecce, Mark Morris Dance Group, Sarasota Opera, Opera New Jersey,
Ravinia Festival, Opera Theater of Pittsburgh, and Monmouth Civic Chorus, among others.
In addition to her busy new music schedule, Jo Ellen has performed and covered a multitude of
operatic roles including Gilda in Rigoletto, Lisette in La Rondine, Zerlina in Don Giovanni, Dorine
in Tartuffe, both Mabel and Edith in Pirates of Penzance, Oscar in Un Ballo in Maschera, and
Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro. Upcoming stage appearances will include Juliette with Dell'Arte
Opera (NYC August 17, 2008), and Giannetta in L'Elisir D'Amore with Sarasota Opera (Feb.- Mar.
2009).
Equally at home on the concert stage, Jo Ellen's oratorio repertoire includes Handel's Messiah,
Faure's Requiem, Haydn's Seasons and Creation, St. John's Passion, Brahms' Requiem,
Mozart's Exultate Jubilate, and Bach Cantata 51.
The lyric soprano has won several vocal awards, including a full tuition scholarship for graduate
work at the University of Michigan. In 2004, she won 2nd place at the National Opera Assocation.
She was awarded with both the Young Artist and Major Artist scholarships through Pittsburgh
Concert Society, and has placed several times with NATS. She has been a finalist with the Joyce
Dutka Competition and the Gerda Lissner Foundation. In 2006, she was awarded the Grace B.
Jackson Prize for Vocal Fellows for her achievements at Tanglewood Music Center.
She holds a Master of Music from the University of Michigan and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from
Carnegie Mellon. Influential coaches and teachers have been Mildred Miller, Martha Sheil, Phyllis
Curtin, Lucy Shelton, Brian Zeger, Ken Noda, and Robert Page. Originally from Middletown, NJ,
she lives in NYC and currently studies voice with soprano Sally Wolf.
